Ringa Hora Services Workforce Development Council, in collaboration with subject matter experts and the current qualifications programme owner, have been working to review the qualifications for the professional wine and hospitality market.
The qualifications were considered to still be fit for purpose, although some minor amendments were recommended. Based on the feedback, the draft qualifications were refined.
The main changes proposed as a result of the review are:
Level 5
Current qualification New Zealand Certificate in Professional Wine Knowledge (Level 5) [Ref: 4285]
Reviewed qualification New Zealand Certificate in Professional Wine Knowledge (Level 5) v2
- The word hotel has been removed from the Strategic Purpose Statement, as this is covered under hospitality.
- The word destination has been removed from the Strategic Purpose Statement, to allow for wider marketing concepts to be covered.
- The word hotel has been removed from Graduate Profile Outcomes 1 and 3.
- The requirement to prepare premium cocktails has been removed from Graduate Profile Outcome 5.
- Qualification Award statement has been updated.
- General Conditions for Programme have been added to give guidance to education providers on programme endorsement considerations.
Level 6
Current qualification New Zealand Diploma in Professional Wine Management (Sommelier) (Level 6) [Ref: 4286]

- The word hotel has been removed from the Strategic Purpose Statement, as this is covered under hospitality.
- The word destination has been removed from the Strategic Purpose Statement, to allow for wider marketing initiatives to be covered.
- The word hotel has been removed from Graduate Profile Outcomes 1 and 5.
- The word destination has been removed from Graduate Profile Outcome 1.
- The term restaurants, hotels, and vineyard cellar doors has been removed from Graduate Profile Outcomes 3 and replaced by the word businesses.
- The term winery, hospitality, hotel and tourism has been removed from Graduate Profile Outcome 7.
- The term organic and biodynamic has been removed from Graduate Profile Outcome 8.
- Qualification Award statement has been updated.
- General Conditions for Programme have been added to give guidance to education providers on programme endorsement considerations.
