Review of Tourism and Travel suite of qualifications

on the New Zealand Qualification and Credentials Framework (NZQCF)

Ringa Hora Services Workforce Development Council has reviewed Tourism and Travel qualifications.

Working groups, consisting of industry and education providers, contributed towards the review of the suite of tourism and travel qualifications.

The qualifications were considered to still be fit for purpose, although some minor amendments were recommended.

The qualifications were submitted to NZQA for evaluation and approval in late January 2025.

The main changes proposed as a result of the review are:

  •  The Strategic Purpose Statement at Level 3-6 have been amended to include reference to sustainable and regenerative tourism.
  • Graduate Profile Outcomes (GPOs) for Level 3-4 have had minimal changes.
  • General conditions for programmes have been updated to encompass Māori values and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, sustainable and regenerative tourism, relevant legislation and considerations for Pasifika and Tangata Whaikaha.

Level 3

 New Zealand Certificate in Tourism

  • Few changes apart from the above.

Level 4

 New Zealand Certificate in Tourism

  • As above.
  • GPO 3 – removed ‘in depth’ and replaced with ‘broad’.

Level 5

New Zealand Diploma in Tourism and Travel

  • It was decided by the working group to make minimal changes to the GPOs but to clarify them.

Level 6

New Zealand Diploma in Tourism and Travel

  • New Graduate Profile Outcomes were developed to align to the strategic purpose of this qualification.
