Ringa Hora’s visit to the South Island in early November was a wonderful chance to network with industry leaders and providers in the Service sector.
Team members including Evangeleen Joseph, Syd Reweti, Zach Edwards, Sandy Chan, Allan Moulai, and Zeena Khan were present for at least one of the sessions we had in Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill. At these sessions we discussed Te Manu Arataki | Leadership Project, the Future of Service Skills credentials, and the review of the Business Qualification Suite.
As well as the hui we organised, we were particularly grateful to attend the Off The Clocks social event held by the Southland Business Chamber. Thanks so much to everyone there for hosting us.
We gained some valuable insights which will help refine our credentials and appreciated the chance to meet everyone. Thank you also to our hosts Ara Institute of Canterbury, Otago Polytechnic | Te Pūkenga, and Southern Institute of Technology!
We were delighted to share some of our mahi from this year’s Careers and Transition Education (CATE) conference, themed “Whāia te iti kahurangi ki te tūohu koe me he maunga teitei | Seek your treasure.”
Our kaimahi, Hinewai Quensell, Erin Lee, and Gracie Talamaivao, presented valuable insights alongside an impressive lineup of keynote speakers which included Katherine Berkett, Meihana Durie, Moana Theodore, Paul Miller, Shane Walker, Lynette Reid & Ian Taylor to name but a few.
Key learnings for our kaimahi included korero on red brain/green brain, acknowledging the pūkorero of Maaui, careers advisers being dream makers, the importance of not knowing and giving it a go anyway, and “choosing to live in this life.”
Ringa Hora hosted two full-capacity workshops: “We be who we see – Mata Ārahi Manomano” and “Inspiring Excellence in Assessment Practice.” Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing appreciation for our new career framework and focus on Māori, Pacific & Tāngata Whaikaha role models, the passionate discussions on assessment best practices, and desire for further training or tailored workshops on both topics.
We were thrilled to have our CE Kari Scrimshaw presenting at the Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA) Conference24 in Taranaki. The conference focused on the National Business Events Strategic Direction – Piata Mai, which includes enduring sector funding, capturing data and economic value, growing cultural integration, creating greater value, storytelling, and also a “resilient sector” aiming at attracting and developing people in the industry.
Kari introduced Te Haeata, the education programme targeted at new entrants into the business events sector, which will provide them with both technical and practical skills, resulting in a qualification, as they work. This piece of work has been developed by the industry and supported by Ringa Hora, ServiceIQ and Grow Tourism. Ringa Hora Council member Loren Aberhart also ran a session at the conference.
We love the work that Inspiring the Future Aotearoa does to encourage careers pathways into the Service sector and more. We see our Industry Engagement Lead Aviation, Allan Moulai, in there repping careers in aviation and airport services at the Aerospace Summit!
Allan, Industry Relationship Manager Beatrice Faumuina, and Workforce Strategy Manager Jenny Connor also attended the November Airport Services conference in Hamilton. It was a great opportunity to meet those who ensure our airports provide vital connectivity across the motu, to share our mahi on Māori and Pacific people in Aviation with a new audience, and to hear about emerging aviation technology – who knew that flying ubers would be a reality in the next couple of years?
We are preparing for a review of our real estate qualifications in early 2025. Marina Masame, Industry Engagement Lead, and Johann Engelbrecht, Qualifications Development Facilitator, have been working with the team at the Real Estate Authority (REA) to make sure everything’s ready! We look forward to talking to industry members during this review
Other highlights in the last quarter of 2024 were Duane Mackwood’s industry work with the cleaning and decontamination sector and Elkan Seaga’s visit to the Contact Centre conference. Thank you so much to everyone who hosted us!
