2024/25 Development of Business Events Credentials

Approved by NZQA October 2025

Ringa Hora Services Workforce Development Council has been working with Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA) and the business events sector to develop new credentials that respond to contemporary needs for the business events sector.

The project has been underway since the review of the now expired conventions and incentives qualifications and associated unit standards in December 2023. There have been a range of meetings held since September 2024 to determine the needs of the sector.

The draft new credentials designed to equip people with the skills and knowledge to professionally contribute to planning, project management, and delivery of business events in Aotearoa New Zealand, were submitted to NZQA 14 August 2025 following consultation and approved by NZQA in October 2025.

The proposed new credentials are listed below, and approved versions will be published on the NZQA website mid-November 2025:

Draft Business events qualification

NZ Certificate in Business Events (Level 4) (60 credits) [5452]

This qualification is intended to provide the business events industry with individuals who can professionally contribute to planning, project management and delivery of business events in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Draft Business events skill standards

These skill standards have been developed as the building blocks for use in programmes aligned with the qualification, and are available from a new NZQA Domain – Business Events.

  • BE1 – 41001 Provide an overview of the business events sector, its structure, roles and planning (Level 3, 5 credits)
  • BE2 – 41002 Contribute to the development of systems, processes and procedures that support organising and running business events (Level 4, 10 credits)
  • BE3 – 41003 Prepare a plan for a business event (Level 4, 10 credits)
  • BE4 – 41004 Apply sales support techniques and relationship management to provide a quality customer experience (Leve 4, 10 credits)
  • BE5 – 41005 Support the organisation, delivery and evaluation of a business event (Level 4, 25 credits).

The BE1/41001 skill standard is proposed to be at Level 3 as it is intended that it may also be suitable for use in schools as part of raising awareness and/or part of a credential to pathway into the Business events sector, or the tourism qualification.

We thank all those that have been involved in this project, and if you want further information or have any queries, please email [email protected].
